The “Intellectual Bar”
elenamary
Last week, I mentioned to Jen, the rumor about Larry’s being a “gay bar” and she said that she had actually heard that Larry’s was a “intellectual” bar. How hilarious is that I thought. But, now I think I know why. Last night when I was there for the regular Thursday night gathering, we discussed Leaves of Grass and pulled out two copies of it. Later when I left I recalled that Larry’s had its own copy in its book shelves. I guess in that way, it is an intellectual bar. How many bar’s do you know that have books on hand that people actually borrow, read and return?Tonight, however, I felt this stereotype or where the perception might originate from. I was sitting with Siddhartha the Indian born, Cockney raised graduate student; Omar the Kuwaiti raised, British educated librarian; Yonathan the linguist and Spanish undergraduate. We switched back and forth between languages, multiple conversations, and then sometimes single conversations. We discussed Irish uprisings, Indian politics, good wines, and like any other group of people, sex. I guess I can see why, It would be thought as an intellectual bar, but intellectual it is most definitely not.
