Sabritones make my heart skip a beat

I am constantly shocked by the changes in my city and state. The change has been tremendous from the time back when my family got excited that Meijer grocery was selling chili peppers to today when I saw it. I stopped at a gas station on my way to work this morning, a gas station near the OSU campus. I say this because most Mexicanos in Columbus live on the West side of the city. So, there I was at a gas station in central Columbus and right by the cashier (not buried away in an “ethnic section”) was my favorite junk food, Sabritones! According to their website “a puffed wheat snack from Mexico that combines the authentic flavors of spicy chili with tangy lime”. At first I could never get Sabritones in Columbus. Then I could only get them at the Mexican grocery store. And now? Now they are at my gas station next to the mints. I am amazed. You Xicanos in Cali, and Chicago and in the Valley just don’t get it; This is amazing!

Those are amazing! I tried them shortly after I moved from Columbus to Chicago and I was delighted by them. But now that I live in an area without a huge Mexican population I have to travel to get them. But everytime I see them, I grab a bag.

Uhh, Meijer at Sawmill hasn’t priced
their chili peps in at least two years. They just sit there in that huge, yummy looking bag exuding that awesome chili pep smell. And no one buys them cuz they aren’t priced. Today is truly a sad day for chili peps. [cry here]. Wanna stage a sit in?
And it’s ‘Meijer’. No damn S, ok.

I’ll miss Sabritones in college! I haven’t seen them here in the East Coast yet, but I sure want to find out where to get them. I guess I might ask my parents to ship them to me from LA. :’(

OH my gosh this is the best snack ever! I used to buy them in Washington state but under a different name. Then all of a sudden the gas station I bought them at quit selling them. I was crushed! I just found these though at a gas station in Fresno, CA and I about did a happy dance right there in the mini mart. Now in San Diego I have GOT to find someone who sells them. I am very happy to start my addiction again! Being pregnant helps too. HA!

on the “S” question: that made me think because I went down that list thinking there are only two of those that I add the s to: I say “I’m going to Meijer’s or Kroger’s” in the same way you would say “I’m going to Elena’s” as in the Meijer family store, and Kroger family store. Both are actually names, like Sam. And it is Sam’s club, possessive, just like the others, but with the others you are leaving out the implied “club” or “store” or whatever.

I used to live in SoCal and it was easy to get them in most specialty Mexican markets, however I moved to DC and haven’t been quite so lucky. I’ve seen them online but I haven’t tried em out yet, my craving hasn’t come that far, however.. I may cave in eventually !

sabritones are the worst chicarron i’ve ever tasted. the consistency is wrong and there is far too much flavor powder. the chili powder is poor quality and the lime taste is way too strong. by its description i should have my mouth on fire with the soothing sensation of a cool lime aftertaste. instead i get a sour pucker lime taste with an old powdered chili flavor. no balance. there are many better ones available, just keep searching!
