They have been called welfare queens, hookers and hos, Aunt Jemimas, etc. For many, it is hard to fathom a black woman, other than Oprah, achieving greatness. I'm glad that he's married to a woman like Michelle. She is accomplished in her own right, and she seems to have her priorities straight. We were all at Critical Race and LatCrit conference in Portland. After dinner, our friend, who is Pakistani, went for a walk ~ and wanted to take sunset photos of the river and bridge near the hotel. You can imagine what happened. I think the cops questioned him for a while and let him go eventually ~ we were furious, but not surprised. Sigh ~ some things never change. Thanks for the link~! I can totally understand how and why you'd feel hurt about this. I had an experience recently where I brought up white privilege to a white man I went to high school with. I told T that there would be advantages he enjoyed because of the color of skin. He then proceeded to tell me that I was as privileged as the next American. Also, he believed Mexicans were the most privileged "race" (his words) in the US because immigrants don't learn English. I never responded. I had already tried to engage in an intellectual discussion on racism, and it disintegrated to name calling. It sucks. I wish we (and by mean activists of color) knew better how to broach these discussions with people who should be our allies. This is saddening.
